The exact Origin of April Fools is still unclear, although some say it was celebrated soon after the adoption of the Gregorian Calendar, which replaced the Julian Calendar. This adoption was happening at different times in different countries, but generally within and around 1852.
The origin seems to relate to the First Day of Spring. In the old Calendar the First Day of Summer was on May 1st, but Pre-Christian cultures still regarded the First Day of Spring to be May 1st and it was the people who celebrated prematurely who became known as April Fools.
The only thing we can be sure of is that over time there has been many headlines in the media relating to famous April Fools Windups, such as:
Spaghetti trees: The BBC television programme Panorama ran a famous hoax in 1957, showing the Swiss harvesting spaghetti from trees. They had claimed that the despised pest, the spaghetti weevil, had been eradicated. A large number of people contacted the BBC wanting to know how to cultivate their own spaghetti trees. It was in fact filmed in St Albans, Hertfordshire.
